WEEK 5 - Additional materials
As an extension of last week's session looking at ABA (applied behaviour analysis) and CBT (cognitive behaviour therapy) the discussion starts this week by looking at Aspergers Syndrome and some of the implications for our teaching practice in the increasing identification of this characteristic. ( more info ) Both ABA and CBT are used to assist these students (and adults).

Bill Rogers in his outline of the 4Rs also helps teachers provide the balance between a structured and supportive classroom environment that provides a flexible accommodation of individual student needs. The key to achieving this is maintaining a range of interventions from least intrusion to more serious strategies (examples) that always focus on the primary behaviour.

Finally, this week a quick look at Solution focused intervention which provides an alternative approach to managing students with difficult behaviours. Rather than breaking down problems or looking for causes this approach focusses on individual strengths and the ability and desire of students to find their own solutions. ( more info )

WAGS
Outlines or scripts of the 2 solution focussed approaches outlined in the lecture. The WAGS outline gives a brief 'script' of an interview with a student using the solution focussed approach. The I-ACE approach is a great way for tackling bullying issues or any situations where conflict is being provoked and buttons are being pushed.
